Sweet, juicy blueberries are rich source of natural pro-anthocyanin pigment antioxidants. They are very low in calories. 100 g fresh berries carry just 57 calories. Nonetheless, they possess essential health benefiting phytonutrients such as soluble dietary fibre, minerals, vitamins, and pigment antioxidants that contribute immensely towards optimum health and wellness.
They are a good source of vitamin C. Recent research has shown that blueberries may help prevent urinary tract infection by increasing the acidity of urine, which helps destroy bacteria, and by preventing bacteria from colonizing on the bladder walls.
Storing Blueberries
The berries are very perishable and easily damaged by improper handling and extreme temperatures, that is why it’s important to refrigerate fresh berries as soon as possible. Store them in the fridge in the original container or in a covered bowl. Rinse your fruits immediately before eating, but not before you put them in the refrigerator. You might want to add a splash of vinegar to the water to eliminate bacteria. Blueberries freeze very well and can keep up to 10 months.
